Paint FAQ
General Paint
How is your paint made?
Rediscover Paint collects high-quality, water-based paint from recycling centres and gives it a fresh start! We screen each pot for quality, viscosity, type, and colour. We then mix it by hand (and by eye) in the workshop to get the perfect shade. We strive not to add anything else to the paint, but occasionally we may use a bit of colourant to get it to the right stage. We use what's already there as much as possible. Waste not, want not!
What impact has the project had so far?
Since 2007, you have helped us save 100 tonnes of paint from waste!!! As the first paint reuse project in Ireland, Rediscover Paint’s work led to the establishment of the national Paint Reuse Network in 2021.
Ordering & Quantities
How do I buy paint?
We have lots of ready-made options available in our Eco Store, you can buy these in store or online. If you would like to order a bespoke colour you can email us at paint@rediscoverycentre.ie. Orders can take 2-5 weeks because of training, collection and mixing time.
What do I need to tell you to order bespoke paint?
Just let us know what colour you are requesting, and how many 5.6 litre pots you need.
Do you do samples?
We don’t do samples at Rediscover Paint. We have swatches of our standard colours that you can come and look at, but they might change slightly from time to time. We mix paint by eye, and by hand, from different paints and formulas and there can be a slight variation in colours.
How much paint do I need?
Our paint comes in 5.6 litre buckets. Typically, 1 litre covers 10-12 square metres. Use a paint calculator like this one for more accuracy. Freshly plastered or textured walls, and covering bright colours, will need more paint!
Can I choose my paint finish (matt, satin, washable, vinyl)?
We don’t offer different finish options. Our goal is to redistribute as much paint as possible, so we work with what’s available rather than customising finishes!
What does the batch number mean?
The batch number identifies paint from the same batch, so colours will match exactly between cans.
What is the date on the paint?
The date shows when the paint was mixed.
Paint Use & Suitability
Can I use your paint for a mural or other use outside?
We offer exterior paint for masonry that withstands weather exposure. Indoor emulsion paints are not generally suitable for outdoor use, but some people do! To protect it, apply an overcoat like Polyvine or another exterior varnish. We don’t recommend using it on an entire house, but it works great for community murals.
Can I use your wall paint on wood?
Masonry paint isn’t ideal for wood, especially outdoors, as wood expands and contracts. Different materials need different properties for durability and adhesion. Using exterior wood paint is better.
Can I use exterior paint inside?
Exterior paint is not recommended for indoor use.
Do you sell varnish to make paint weatherproof?
No, we don’t sell varnish. You can find it at your local hardware store, just ensure it is compatible with water based paint.
Paint Storage & Use
When should I use the paint?
Our paint should be used as soon as possible, within one month of purchase. Paint should be kept out of direct sunlight or extreme cold to make sure it is at its best.
Delivery & Availability
Do you deliver?
No, customers collect paint from the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun. We do deliver free paint to community groups in partnership with some county councils.
I’m in a community group, how can I get paint?
Please get in touch with our paint team, paint@rediscoverycentre.ie, letting us know where you are based.
I’m outside Dublin, can I still buy your paint?
Yes, if you can collect at the Rediscovery Centre in Dublin. Otherwise, check our Paint Reuse Network members across Ireland!
Paint Donations
Can I donate my leftover paint?
Unfortunately we are unable to accept paint donations at the Centre as we are only authorised to collect paint from designated recycling centres. If you would like to donate it for reuse, you can drop it off at your local recycling centre that Paint Reuse Network members collect from. You can find them here.
